Furlongs Art Print by Eric Ravilious

Painted in 1935, this watercolour was painted during a visit to the cottage of fellow artist Peggy Angus at the foot of the South Downs in Firle near Lewes, Sussex. Situated near Charleston at Firle, 'Furlongs' was by all accounts quite a Bohemian hotspot of the era becoming a gathering place for artists and Peggy hosted some great parties. Eric was exceptionally fond of his visits there and painted it on a number of occasions (see 'Tea at Furlongs'). From here he explored the chalk paths of Downs on painting expeditions regardless of the weather.

In this painting farm hands are bringing in the hay using old-fashioned horses and wagons. Neat haystacks are visible in the fields while in the foreground sunflowers grow in Peggy's flint-walled garden. 'Furlongs' is a particularly rare work by Ravilious as in this painting he actually depicts human figures - that of Peggy herself and also a farm labourer leading a horse. Mostly his compositions are devoid of people, a fact that has been often wondered upon by critics.
