Greenhouse: Geraniums and Carnations by Eric Ravilious
'Geraniums and Carnations' is one of a series of striking greenhouse interiors painted by Eric Ravilious. It depicts a wood-framed greenhouse with Geraniums on a table in the foreground growing in terracotta pots. A hessian sack lies on the floor of the green house next to a coiled hosepipe featuring the bold typography so favoured by this artist. Light floods in from above though the palette used by the artist is typically subtle and muted. This is an unusual composition, typical for Ravillious. He favoured unusual and slightly off-kilter subjects and angles - one of the many things that made his watercolours so distinctive and so unique. Glass houses and gardens provided the inspiration for many of his water colours and you might also like our limited editions of 'Cyclamen and Tomatoes' and also 'Strawberry Nets' painted around this time.
