Paddle Steamers, Bristol Art Print by Eric Ravilious
This watercolour shows paddle steamers moored at Bristol Quay in 1938. Ravilious accompanied his friend, fellow artist John Nash on a trip to Bristol to paint ships moored up for the winter. In this watercolour the gaily painted ship 'Britannia' is depicted with her huge paddle wheel in the foreground, Within a year, she would be renamed the HMS Skiddaw and dispatched to the North Sea as a mine sweeper and convoy escort. She was finally scrapped in 1956.
