Searchlight at Dusk War Painting by Eric Ravilious

In 1940 Eric took on his role as Official War Artist becoming one of the finest and most prolific war painters of his generation before his death while on active duty during World War Two.

'Searchlight at Dusk' is one of Eric's wartime paintings produced during his time as Official War Artist' between 1940 and his untimely death in 1942. It shows a searchlight on the South Coast of England shining into the sky to seek out enemy aircraft. It is manned by three figures in khaki. Rich greens, blues and browns lend this scene an other-worldly quality so distinctive of a Ravilious painting. There is a sense of waiting for something dramatic to occur.
