Barrage Balloons Painting by Eric Ravilious

Produced in 1940 in watercolour with pencil on paper, 'Barrage Balloons Outside a British Port' is one of Eric's most evocative wartime paintings. It shows Sheerness Docks in Kent on a grey and blustery day with boats and barrage balloons buffeted by wind. Two figures in military uniform are walking by in the distance labouring against the stiff breeze.

This is one of our images from a new collection of reproductions of Eric's war time paintings. Other in the series include 'Destroyers' featuring war ships and also 'RAF Planes on an Airfield' along with his painting of 'Paddle Steamers
